The Screen Academy

For Western Australian highschool students and teachers

Welcome

At Swan Christian College we have a Media Arts program that runs through Years 8 to 10,  ATAR and General Media Production and Analysis courses in Years 11 & 12, and we are also offering a Creative Lab program, where students can pursue their passion in almost any arts-related activity, whether it be playing an instrument, editing film, cinematography, dance, acting, composing... the possibilities are pretty endless.

Here are some GPTs that are specifically designed to help you with your filmmaking.  You can use these when you're planning, but you can also upload photographs or images and ask for feedback at any time.  You can even upload your screenplay and the Cinematography Mentor will help you create a shot-list.

Alternative Creative Pathways to University

The most popular way to qualify for an arts course?

In the last few years, universities have realised that a portfolio of student work might be a better indication of a student's potential to be successful in an Arts course, such as Screen Production, Animation or Games Design.  Some students might find this pathway more enjoyable and less stressful than focusing on a high ATAR score.

Do what you love, and call it school?

Creative Lab was offered for 2023, but many students didn't realise just how amazing an opportunity it was, so low numbers prevented us from running it.  Make sure you speak with Mr Matthews or Mr Smith about Creative Lab before you decide what you're going to study in Year 11 or Year 12 for 2025!

ACTIVE LEARNING IS ENJOYABLE LEARNING

In order to learn, we need to retain information. Believe it or not, this is not most efficiently done by having a teacher stand in front of a class and tell you stuff, and let's face it, that's not much fun either. Consider the graphic below and think about how we might best learn - and who needs to do the work! You'll notice that if you supplement what the teacher says (or doesn't say) with relevant reading, watching videos (you can YouTube LOTS of great stuff), discuss with your peers, practice and teach each other, you'll increase your learning many-fold. This is a lesson for you to take well beyond your school years, and if you get into the habit of active and independent learning you will find you enjoy your learning, and you'll excel in all areas.
